Meet the Playwrights!

Here are the fabulous playwrights of the 2016 season of Communal Spaces. Look at these awesome folks!

Paul Cameron Hardy
 (An Invitation to a Panicking) makes plays with friends and foes, in theaters and back-alleys. Founding member of playmaking group Big Data (or Dolores) and the mixed media collective Big Handsome Guts. Former Youngblood. MFA with Erin Courtney, Anne Washburn, and Mac Wellman at Brooklyn College.

Phillip Howze (462 Halsey) is a playwright whose work has been developed at Bay Area Playwrights Festival, BRIC Arts-Media, Bushwick Starr, Cutting Ball Theater, Theater Masters, PRELUDE Festival 2015, SPACE at Ryder Farm, Sundance Institute, and Yale Cabaret. A graduate of Yale School of Drama, he is the 2015-16 Artist Fellow at Lincoln Center Education, a member of Clubbed Thumb’s Early Career Writers Group and the 2016 Emerging Writers Group at the Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival. Prior to attending graduate school, he worked in advocacy at the Open Society Foundations. He was previously an educator at the US Embassy’s cultural center in Rangoon, Burma.

headshot2Rachel Kauder Nalebuff (Through a Thing) writes for performance. She is the creator of My Little Red Book (Twelve Books) and co-editor of The Feminist Utopia Project (Feminist Press) with Alexandra Brodsky. Her work has been performed at REDCAT, Machine Project, the Women’s Center for Creative Work, and Dixon Place. She is currently a student in Erin Courtney and Mac Wellman’s playwriting program at Brooklyn College. Originally (and always), she is from New Haven.

MNG_photoMara Nelson-Greenberg (The Angry King Sees a Show) is a New York-based playwright who grew up in Brooklyn. Her plays include VentingHealthcareMake Belief, Paradise Springs and Hamlet by Mia Fefferman. Her work has been produced or developed at Parade Ground, Lincoln Center Theater Director’s Lab, Theater Intime, A Farm Show, Hansel and Gretel Pocket Utopia, Amoralab, Clubbed Thumb’s Summerworks Reading Series and Little Theatre at Dixon Place. She is the co-writer and co-star of the web series End Times Girls Club, which was released in March of 2016 by Above Average. She is a member of the 2015/2016 Clubbed Thumb Emerging Writer’s Group.

DSC_0263Fergus Scully (Afterlife) studied American history at Columbia University and acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse. He is the Artistic Director of The Instigators and the co-producer of this year’s Communal Spaces. He has written a few other plays, but the only one ever performed was Central Tundra, a ten minute short set in prehistoric Manhattan. He will direct his own adaptation of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler this October at the Secret Theatre in Long Island City.

Cate 1 CroppedCatherine Yu (The Wedding Party) Plays include Le Jeté (Soho Rep W/D Lab 2016), Stargaze (MaYi Spring LabFest 2016), The Sun Experiment (FringeNYC 2014 Award for Excellence in Playwriting; Time Out New York’s Top Ten Music and Nightlife Events of The Week, published by IndieTheaterNow), and The Day Is Long To End (MaYi 2015 Spring LabFest). Her short plays have been commissioned by the 52nd Street Project, UglyRhino, and Culture Project. Her short play “A Sand Romance” is a 2016 Heidman finalist. She has been a NYTW Emerging Artist of Color and Year 18 Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab writer. She is a current member of the MaYi Writers Lab. She is the former writer’s assistant to the filmmaker Peter Hedges. BA: Stanford University. MFA: NYU.
